Lockstep release

A release model where related packages move together in matching versions.

A lockstep release is a package release model where related components are versioned and published together. Instead of updating one package at a time, maintainers ship matching versions across a set of tightly coupled packages so they stay compatible. This is common in toolchains and monorepos where shared code, APIs, or build behavior must change in sync.

In cyber security, lockstep releases matter because a compromised release path can affect many packages at once. If an attacker steals a publish token or abuses a CI workflow, a malicious version may be pushed across the whole release set, increasing reach and speeding propagation. Defenders should treat the publishing pipeline as sensitive infrastructure: restrict release permissions, review automation, pin workflow actions, and verify that package versions and artifacts match expected signatures or hashes before deployment.
