llama.cpp is an open-source C/C++ inference engine for running large language models locally or as a service. It is valued for being lightweight and easy to deploy, but that also means its security posture depends heavily on how it is exposed. A local model runner is usually lower risk than a networked service, yet the risk changes quickly when it accepts prompts, files, or API requests from untrusted users.
In cyber security, llama.cpp matters because bugs in parsing, memory handling, or request processing can have serious impact. A flaw may cause a crash and denial of service, or in worse cases allow arbitrary code execution. Defenders should treat it like any other internet-facing server component: patch promptly, restrict network access, run it with least privilege, and isolate it with containers or virtual machines. Secure deployment is as important as model performance.
