Liveness verification is a control that checks whether a real, present person is interacting with a digital system, rather than a photo, video, mask, deepfake, or replayed recording. It is commonly used during account onboarding, password resets, and step-up authentication to reduce identity fraud.
In cyber security, it matters because attackers often try to bypass identity checks with stolen credentials, synthetic identities, or spoofed biometrics. Liveness checks add friction by asking for signs of active presence, such as motion, blink patterns, voice response, or challenge-based actions. Strong implementations are usually combined with document verification, device intelligence, and risk scoring, because no single signal is enough on its own. When tuned well, liveness verification helps defenders block impersonation while keeping legitimate users moving through the flow.
