Linux migration

The process of moving users, devices, or services from another operating system to Linux.

Linux migration is the process of moving users, devices, servers, or services from another operating system to Linux. In practice, it may include replacing desktops, replatforming applications, changing identity and management tools, and rebuilding support workflows. The goal is often to reduce dependence on a single vendor and gain more control over configuration and updates.

In cybersecurity, migration matters because it changes the trust chain. A well-managed move can improve patch consistency, reduce unsupported software, and make privilege controls and configuration baselines easier to enforce. But it can also create risk if legacy applications, remote access, or endpoint management are not redesigned, leaving gaps attackers can exploit. Defenders treat migration as a security project: inventory assets, test compatibility, isolate exceptions, and verify logging, recovery, and patch ownership before switching critical systems.
