Lightning Network

A Bitcoin payment layer designed for faster, lower-cost transactions.

The Lightning Network is a Bitcoin payment layer that moves transactions off the base chain by using payment channels between participants. Users can open channels, exchange many rapid payments, and later settle the final balance on-chain. This design makes transfers faster and usually much cheaper than regular Bitcoin transactions.

In cyber security, Lightning matters because it adds new infrastructure to protect: nodes, channel state, liquidity management, and keys used to authorize payments. Attackers may target poorly secured Lightning nodes, steal wallet credentials, or abuse exposed services that handle routing and payments. Defenders harden nodes with strong access control, secure key storage, patching, monitoring, and careful separation between payment logic and other web services. In real operations, Lightning is often part of a wider crypto stack, so its security depends on both the software and the underlying server environment.
