License exposure

Compliance risk created by software license terms and obligations.

License exposure is the compliance risk created when software includes third-party code with license terms the organization may not be following. Open-source and commercial components can impose obligations such as attribution, notice preservation, source disclosure, distribution limits, or approval before use. If a team ships code without tracking those terms, it can create legal and operational problems even when the code is technically secure.

In cyber security, license exposure matters because software composition analysis is not only about vulnerabilities. Security and legal teams use scanners to identify component licenses, flag incompatible combinations, and enforce policy before release. It appears in real workflows when developers add a new dependency, when a build pipeline checks whether a permissive or restrictive license is acceptable, or when compliance reviews block shipment until notices and obligations are resolved. Good governance reduces the chance that a safe-seeming dependency becomes a legal liability.
