libheif is an open-source library for decoding and encoding HEIF and AVIF images. It sits inside image-processing pipelines and turns compressed media files into pixels that applications can display, thumbnail, or transform. Because it handles complex container formats, it must parse metadata, color profiles, layers, and other structured data with care.
In cyber security, libheif matters because a flaw in a shared library can affect many products at once. If a service accepts untrusted uploads and automatically previews or resizes them, an attacker may send a malformed file to trigger memory corruption, denial of service, or, in the worst case, code execution. Defenders reduce risk by patching quickly, limiting where decoding happens, sandboxing the library, and treating image uploads as hostile input.
