Lead scoring is a ranking method that assigns prospects a value based on how likely they are to convert, buy, or create business value. Scores are usually built from signals such as company size, website visits, email engagement, prior conversations, industry, or fit with a target profile. In practice, it helps sales and marketing teams focus effort on the most promising contacts instead of treating every lead equally.
In cyber security, lead scoring matters because the same ranking logic can be used to prioritize targets or protect them. Attackers may score victims to decide which accounts are worth phishing, impersonation, or follow-up fraud, especially when public data and leaked business information reveal who has access or buying power. Defenders use lead scoring in a safer way: to triage inbound sales requests, prioritize high-risk accounts, or focus outreach on sensitive customers. Because the model depends on data quality, access control, and governance, poor inputs can create bad decisions and privacy exposure.
