An IT service provider is an organization that delivers shared digital services to customers, partners, or other businesses. This can include hosting, network access, email, cloud platforms, identity services, or managed security operations. Because many clients depend on the same provider, a single technical failure, configuration mistake, or compromise can have wide impact.
In cyber security, IT service providers matter because they concentrate risk. Attackers may target them to reach multiple downstream organizations at once, steal credentials, disrupt availability, or use trusted service channels to hide malicious activity. Defenders therefore treat providers as part of the attack surface: they review third-party access, enforce strong authentication, monitor service logs, and plan for outages and compromise scenarios. Good provider governance reduces the chance that one shared service becomes a shared incident.
