IRM

Information Rights Management, policy enforcement that travels with documents and files.

IRM, or Information Rights Management, is a control model that attaches usage policy to a document or file itself. Instead of protecting only the network or storage location, IRM can enforce rules such as who may open a file, whether it can be copied, printed, forwarded, or edited, and whether access can expire or be revoked later.

IRM matters because sensitive content often leaves the original security boundary through email, cloud sharing, or removable media. In defense, it helps organizations keep control over classified, regulated, or confidential documents after distribution. In attacks, criminals may try to steal the file and its keys, abuse a misconfiguration, or move the content into an unmanaged viewer to bypass policy. IRM is most effective when paired with strong identity, device checks, logging, and clear data classification.
