io_uring

A Linux interface for high-performance asynchronous I/O.

io_uring is a Linux interface for high-performance asynchronous I/O. Instead of making a separate system call for every read, write, or network operation, programs submit requests to a shared ring buffer and later collect completions. This reduces overhead, improves throughput, and lets software handle many operations in parallel with less CPU cost.

In cyber security, io_uring matters because it is a native kernel feature, not a niche add-on. Defenders may use it in modern services, while attackers may abuse it to blend into ordinary system activity or to build tooling that avoids older, noisier API patterns. That can complicate monitoring, especially if security tools focus only on familiar process behavior or classic syscall traces. For analysts, unusual io_uring usage can be a sign to inspect how a program is interacting with the kernel, what resources it is touching, and whether its I/O pattern matches the workload it claims to have.
