Internal systems

Company-owned platforms used for operations, administration, or support rather than public-facing services.

Internal systems are company-owned platforms used for operations, administration, support, and other back-office functions rather than public-facing services. They may include identity platforms, file shares, HR tools, monitoring consoles, business applications, and remote management services. Because these systems often hold sensitive data and control important workflows, they are a common target in cyberattacks.

In practice, attackers may reach internal systems through stolen credentials, phishing, exposed remote access, or abuse of trusted accounts. Once inside, they can move laterally, collect information, change configurations, or prepare further access. Defenders treat internal systems as critical assets by limiting privileges, segmenting networks, monitoring authentication activity, and logging administrative actions. A security event involving internal systems does not always mean public data exposure, but it can still disrupt operations and reveal how far an intruder has progressed.
