Internal system IDs

Machine-generated identifiers that can link records across systems and workflows.

Internal system IDs are machine-generated identifiers used by applications, databases, and workflows to track records behind the scenes. They are usually not meant for public display, but they let different systems connect the same person, case, ticket, or transaction across tables, services, and backups.

They matter in cyber security because they can reveal how a platform is organized and how data is linked. In an intrusion, exposed IDs may help an attacker correlate records, reconstruct relationships, or pivot from one leaked dataset to another. In a backup leak, they can also expose older or archived links that production systems no longer show, increasing the value of the stolen data. Defenders treat these identifiers as sensitive metadata, limit where they appear, and avoid exposing them in logs, exports, or public-facing interfaces.
