An Internal Developer Platform is a company-managed layer that hides low-level infrastructure details and gives engineers approved, reusable “golden paths” for building, deploying, and operating software. Instead of every team choosing its own cloud, permissions, CI/CD, and logging setup, the IDP standardizes those choices behind self-service interfaces.
In cyber security, an IDP matters because it is a control point as much as a productivity tool. It can enforce identity, scoped access, policy checks, audit logging, secrets handling, and spend limits before code or workloads reach production. Attackers often benefit from platform sprawl, overly broad permissions, or inconsistent deployment paths; a well-designed IDP reduces that attack surface. In modern environments, it also helps govern non-human users such as AI agents by limiting what they can access, recording what they do, and keeping risky actions inside approved workflows.
