Internal database material

business data that may increase extortion pressure if exposed.

Internal database material is business data stored in systems that are meant for employees, administrators, or internal applications rather than the public. It can include customer records, operational logs, pricing data, account details, planning documents, or transaction data. In many organizations, these databases support core workflows, so exposure can reveal both sensitive information and how the business operates.

In cyber security, this term matters because leaked internal databases often increase extortion pressure. Attackers may use proof of access to demand payment, threaten public release, or combine database contents with stolen documents for greater leverage. Defenders treat these datasets as high-value assets: they limit access, encrypt sensitive fields, monitor unusual queries and exports, and test backups and recovery. If a leak is claimed, teams should verify what was actually accessed, assess the data’s sensitivity, and contain the source before assuming the entire database was exposed.
