Internal Control

A self-assessment route where the provider evaluates and documents conformity without mandatory third-party involvement.

Internal control is a conformity route in which the provider assesses, verifies, and documents compliance on its own, without a mandatory third-party review. In the EU AI Act context, it is used only for certain systems and risk categories, and it depends on the applicable legal path and standards.

This matters in cyber security because self-assessment shifts more responsibility onto the provider’s internal controls. Teams must protect training data, validation sets, model versions, technical files, and change records, since those artifacts prove integrity and traceability. Attackers may try to alter documentation, hide unauthorized model changes, or exploit weak governance to make a noncompliant system appear compliant. Defensively, internal control works best when paired with strict change management, access control, audit logs, and repeatable evidence collection.
