Intermediary verification

checks performed by a platform or service before content is published, shared, or stored.

Intermediary verification means checks a platform, app, or storage service performs before content is published, forwarded, archived, or otherwise handled. Instead of trusting the uploader alone, the intermediary inspects the file, metadata, watermark, signature, or policy flags and decides whether the content should be accepted, relabeled, throttled, or blocked.

This matters in cyber security because many attacks rely on content surviving the journey through multiple systems. A fake video, cloned voice note, or phishing image may look harmless at upload time but become dangerous after reposting, conversion, or export. If intermediaries verify provenance, they can preserve machine-readable labels, detect stripped metadata, and reduce the spread of manipulated media. In defense, these checks are part of layered provenance pipelines: creation, upload, redistribution, and review. Without intermediary verification, even a valid warning can disappear after a screenshot or file conversion, leaving downstream users with no reliable signal.
