Interface records

Data that documents how systems exchange or process operational information.

Interface records are data files or logs that document how systems exchange, transform, or process operational information. In practice, they can describe message formats, transaction status, timestamps, partner identifiers, error codes, and other details used by middleware, APIs, EDI gateways, or internal integration tools.

They matter in cyber security because they often reveal how business workflows connect across applications and organizations. Attackers may target interface records to learn which systems talk to each other, identify valuable partners or transactions, and map where credentials or controls are weak. In extortion cases, these records can be used to pressure a victim by exposing operational details rather than customer data alone. Defenders should protect them with strong access control, encryption, monitoring, and retention limits, since interface records can become both a reconnaissance source and a sensitive audit trail.
