Interactive computing

systems that respond to user input in real time through a screen, buttons, or other controls.

Interactive computing is software or hardware that responds to user input in real time through a screen, buttons, touch, keyboard, or other controls. Instead of running unattended, it waits for actions and updates its output immediately, which makes the user part of the system’s behavior.

In cyber security, interactivity matters because every input path is an attack surface. Badly designed menus, hidden service modes, or weak input validation can let an attacker change settings, trigger debug features, or confuse users with fake prompts. On embedded devices and consoles, security teams often study interactive behavior to reverse engineer firmware, test permissions, and look for unsafe assumptions in UI code. Defenders also use interactive consoles for monitoring and incident response, but they must protect those interfaces with authentication, logging, and clear separation between user actions and privileged commands.
