Interactive access

a live session that lets an operator issue commands directly on a system.

Interactive access is a live session on a target system that lets an operator type commands directly, see immediate results, and adjust actions in real time. It is different from automated malware execution because the attacker is actively controlling the session, often through a shell, remote desktop, or administration tool.

In cyber attacks, interactive access usually means the intruder has already reached a usable foothold and can move, inspect files, dump data, or stage ransomware manually. It matters because it gives attackers flexibility and makes detection harder: each command can be tuned to the environment. Defenders look for signs such as unusual logons, remote command shells, privilege escalation, and hands-on keyboard behavior. Limiting this access with strong authentication, network segmentation, least privilege, and alerting on suspicious sessions helps prevent a small breach from becoming full compromise.
