Intent signals

Behavioral clues that help defenders infer what a user is trying to do across repeated interactions.

Intent signals are behavioral clues that help security teams infer what a user is trying to do across multiple interactions, rather than from a single message or event. In AI abuse monitoring, they can include repeated requests, gradual refinement of a topic, evasive wording, or shifting between seemingly harmless questions and more specific harmful ones. Because one prompt can look benign on its own, intent signals help defenders understand the pattern behind the activity.

This matters in cyber security and platform defense because many misuse cases are staged over time. Attackers may split a harmful goal into small steps, use multiple accounts, or ask for “research” and then drift toward operational details. Defenders look for these signals in logs, session history, reputation data, and content reviews, then combine them with policy rules or risk scoring. Good detection is careful: it reduces false positives while still catching coordinated abuse, fraud, credential attacks, or dual-use requests that hide malicious intent.
