Integration secret

A token or credential used by one service to authenticate with another service.

An integration secret is a token, API key, or similar credential that one service uses to prove its identity to another service. In practice, it lets connected tools trust each other without a human entering a password each time. These secrets are common in enterprise platforms where ticketing, documentation, source control, chat, and identity systems exchange data automatically.

In cyber security, integration secrets matter because whoever obtains them may impersonate a trusted service, pull data, or trigger actions across connected systems. Attackers often look for them in configuration files, environment variables, logs, backups, or readable application directories. Defenders reduce risk by storing secrets in dedicated vaults, limiting file access, rotating tokens regularly, and separating permissions so one leaked secret cannot reach every integrated service.
