Insert

A component placed into another material to add function, strength, or attachment.

An insert is a separate component placed inside another material to add a new function, improve strength, or provide a better attachment point. In manufactured parts, inserts are often used for threads, alignment, reinforcement, or holding magnets and sensors in place. The base material may be plastic, resin, or another soft substrate that would not hold up well on its own.

In cyber security, inserts matter in physical devices because weak retention can become a security problem. A loose insert in an enclosure, lock, access panel, or IoT device may let an attacker open the case, weaken tamper resistance, or damage a mounting point used for cameras, readers, or alarms. Defenders use properly sized inserts, heat-set or press-fit methods, adhesives, and stress testing to keep parts secure over time. The goal is not just to place the insert correctly, but to make sure it stays reliable under heat, vibration, and repeated use.
