Infrastructure overlap

Reuse of servers, domains, or hosting patterns across campaigns, often used as a hunting clue.

Infrastructure overlap is the reuse of servers, domains, IP ranges, TLS certificates, hosting providers, or traffic patterns across multiple intrusion campaigns. Attackers may recycle command-and-control backends, rent the same infrastructure, or inherit systems that were previously used by other operators. For defenders, this overlap is valuable because it can connect otherwise separate alerts into one hunting cluster.

It matters because infrastructure often leaves more stable evidence than malware code. Analysts can pivot on domain registration, hosting history, certificate fingerprints, DNS records, and timing patterns to identify related activity. In real incidents, reused infrastructure may suggest collaboration, shared tooling, resale, or compromise of the same backend—but it does not, by itself, prove the same threat actor is responsible. Good defenders use infrastructure overlap to prioritize investigation, enrich detection rules, and map campaign scope while waiting for stronger proof from malware, victimology, or command patterns.
