Information security

The practice of protecting trust, context, and communications from manipulation or abuse.

Information security is the practice of protecting information systems, trust relationships, context, and communications from unauthorized access, alteration, deception, or misuse. It is broader than pure cybersecurity: the goal is not only to stop technical intrusion, but also to preserve the integrity and meaning of data, messages, identities, and decisions.

In real operations, information security includes access control, authentication, encryption, logging, secure governance, and clear role definitions. It also matters in defense and public administration because hostile actors often try to exploit ambiguity, impersonate officials, seed misleading narratives, or distort the interpretation of routine decisions. Good information security reduces that attack surface by making authority, scope, and communications verifiable. In hybrid conflict, this is critical: even without a system breach, manipulated context can create confusion, damage trust, and support disinformation campaigns.
