Information overload is a condition where people are exposed to so many messages, alerts, or details that it becomes harder to process, prioritize, and remember what matters. In cyber security, this is not just a usability problem: overloaded users are more likely to miss warning signs, click without checking, or ignore genuine security guidance because it blends into the noise.
Attackers often exploit this by flooding targets with emails, notifications, or urgent-looking prompts so a malicious message seems routine or important enough to trust. Defenders face a similar risk through alert fatigue, where too many logs and security alerts reduce attention to the few that indicate real compromise. Good security programs reduce overload with clear filtering, strong message hierarchy, limited unnecessary notifications, and training that helps users recognize high-risk events quickly.
