An inference setup is the hardware and software configuration that lets a trained AI model generate outputs on a system. It can include compatible processors, memory, model files, runtime software, and settings that determine how the model runs. For a model split across several devices, the setup must also coordinate how those devices share the workload.
In cyber security, inference setup matters because running a model on unfamiliar or low-powered devices can require considerable configuration and access to system resources. In research, automation may make this process easier; in an attack, compromised or exposed devices could potentially be prepared to run model workloads. A successful setup alone does not prove a device was compromised or that malware can spread autonomously. Defenders should secure device-management interfaces, restrict access to hardware, and segment consumer and IoT devices from sensitive systems.
