Inference efficiency

The ability to generate model output with less compute, lower latency, or both.

Inference efficiency is the ability of a machine learning model to produce output using less compute, lower latency, or both. In practice, it depends on factors such as model size, batching, caching, quantization, and how much prompt context must be processed for each request.

In cyber security, inference efficiency matters because it affects cost, speed, and scale. Defenders want efficient inference for malware classification, log analysis, alert triage, and chatbots that must answer quickly under heavy load. Attackers also benefit from it: efficient models let them generate phishing emails, evasive malware text, or reconnaissance summaries at higher volume and lower cost. Security teams often look for efficiency trade-offs when choosing hosted AI services, because a faster or cheaper model may reduce controls, while a more controlled deployment may improve governance but require more infrastructure.
