Industrial competencies

specialized technical knowledge and capabilities used in production or engineering.

Industrial competencies are the specialized engineering, manufacturing, and process skills that let an organization design, build, test, and maintain complex systems. In sectors like aerospace, semiconductors, and critical infrastructure, these capabilities are often as valuable as physical assets because they include know-how, tooling, standards, and repeatable quality control.

In cyber security, industrial competencies matter because attackers often target the people, documents, and systems that hold this knowledge. Theft of design files, process recipes, CAD data, or production schedules can damage a company even without ransomware. Defenders protect these competencies with network segmentation, access control, intellectual property protection, monitoring, and backups of engineering data. Preserving industrial competencies also supports resilience: if a site loses key specialists or trusted partners, recovery can take far longer than restoring servers alone.
