An independent assessment is a third-party evaluation of an AI system’s safety, security, or compliance posture. Unlike an internal review, it is performed by an outside auditor or verification team that can test the system more objectively and check whether documented controls match real behavior.
In cyber security, this matters because AI systems can expose new attack paths through prompts, tools, plugins, data access, and automated actions. Independent assessments help verify logging, access control, incident handling, and model-change tracking, and they often include red-teaming for prompt injection, tool misuse, and data leakage. Defenders use these assessments to prove a system is fit for deployment, while attackers benefit when organizations skip them and ship unchecked models with excessive permissions or weak monitoring.
