Incremental improvement

Small, steady gains rather than a single major breakthrough.

Incremental improvement means making small, steady gains over time instead of relying on one major breakthrough. In cyber security, this often describes how both attackers and defenders refine tools, tactics, and processes in small steps. A phishing kit may gain better templates, a malware sample may add new evasion tricks, or a security team may tighten detection rules, improve logging, and reduce response times bit by bit.

This matters because many security outcomes are decided by accumulation, not sudden change. Attackers use incremental improvement to make malicious code harder to spot and more reliable to run. Defenders use the same approach to harden systems, patch weaknesses, and raise the cost of compromise. In practice, progress can look subtle: a slightly better lure, a more precise alert, or a small reduction in false positives. Those modest gains can become significant when repeated across many systems and many incidents.
