Incident logging

stored activity records that help reconstruct security events.

Incident logging is the practice of storing activity records that help security teams reconstruct what happened during a suspicious event. These records can include authentication attempts, file changes, network connections, administrative actions, and alerts from security tools. Good logs create a timeline that supports investigation, containment, and later reporting.

In cyber security, incident logging matters because attackers often try to hide their tracks, while defenders need evidence to confirm or refute a compromise. Logs can show whether an account was used unusually, whether a system was accessed from an unexpected location, or whether a web server changed in a way that matches an intrusion. Strong logging also helps incident response teams preserve evidence, correlate events across systems, and distinguish a real breach from a false alarm. Without reliable logs, it becomes much harder to prove what was accessed, when it happened, and how far the activity spread.
