In-process context

visibility from inside the application process, where runtime activity can be examined more closely.

In-process context means the security tool can observe activity from inside the application’s own runtime, not just from the network or an external agent. Because it shares the process boundary, it can inspect request handling, function calls, data transformations, and policy decisions as they happen. This gives defenders more detail than perimeter controls, which often only see packets or URLs.

In cyber security, in-process context matters because many attacks only become visible after code starts executing. Examples include injection payloads that pass initial filtering, malicious API inputs that trigger unsafe business logic, or attempts to abuse authentication and session flows. A runtime application self-protection tool using in-process context can detect suspicious parameters, block dangerous method calls, or enforce virtual patching before a fix is deployed. The tradeoff is that deeper visibility usually requires tighter integration with the app, so performance, compatibility, and deployment complexity must be managed carefully.
