Image-based abuse is the nonconsensual creation, sharing, or threat of sharing intimate images. The material may be real, altered, or fully synthetic, including AI-generated deepfakes. The goal is usually to shame, intimidate, extort, or control a target by turning sexual imagery into leverage.
It matters in cyber security because the harm is not limited to the image itself; it often becomes part of a broader attack such as sextortion, cyberstalking, or harassment across multiple accounts and platforms. Attackers use fake or stolen images to increase pressure, while defenders rely on evidence preservation, account logs, timestamps, and reporting workflows to prove what happened. Synthetic content also creates a verification problem, since visual inspection alone may not reveal manipulation. For that reason, provenance, message history, and platform records are often more important than whether the image looks authentic.
