Identity services

login and account infrastructure that defenders often check during incident verification.

Identity services are the systems that manage user accounts, authentication, and access control. They include tools such as single sign-on, directory services, password resets, multi-factor authentication, and account provisioning. In practice, they decide who can log in, what resources an account can reach, and how access is revoked when needed.

They matter in cyber security because attackers often target identity first. If they steal credentials, hijack sessions, or change account settings, they can move through email, VPN, cloud apps, and internal tools without triggering obvious malware alerts. Defenders therefore check identity services during incident verification to look for suspicious logins, new admin accounts, MFA changes, disabled security controls, and unusual access from unfamiliar locations or devices. In ransomware cases, these systems can reveal whether a victim post reflects real compromise or only a claim.
