Identity flow

the steps used to verify a user, account, or session during login or checkout.

An identity flow is the sequence of checks a system uses to confirm that a user, account, or session is legitimate during login, checkout, password reset, or other sensitive actions. It can include credentials, multi-factor prompts, device signals, token validation, risk scoring, and step-up verification when behavior looks unusual.

In cyber security, identity flows matter because they are the gate between normal traffic and protected actions. Attackers often target them with credential stuffing, bot-driven signups, account takeover attempts, and automated checkout abuse, looking for weak checks or predictable prompts. Defenders harden identity flows with MFA, rate limits, bot detection, session binding, fraud scoring, and abuse-resistant challenges. A strong identity flow should verify both the account and the session, while keeping friction low for real customers and high for automation that does not belong.
