Identity evidence is a document or record used to prove that a person is who they claim to be. Common examples include a driver’s license, passport, or government ID image. In digital services, these files are often collected during onboarding, account recovery, or identity proofing to verify eligibility and reduce fraud.
In cyber security, identity evidence matters because it is more reusable than ordinary profile data. A stolen password can be changed, but a leaked ID image can be copied, shared, and reused in impersonation, synthetic identity fraud, or attempts to defeat other verification systems. Attackers value these records because they can support account takeover, social engineering, and fraudulent enrollment. Defenders should treat identity evidence as high-sensitivity data: store it separately, restrict access, encrypt it, log all access, and delete it when it is no longer needed.
