Identity attribution is the ability to tie an action, session, or event to a verified user account. In security operations, it answers the basic question: who did this? Strong attribution depends on trusted sign-in records, multi-factor authentication, device context, and logs that connect a request to a real person or service identity.
This matters because without attribution, defenders lose auditability and incident response slows down. Personal logins, shared accounts, and unmanaged browser sessions can hide who uploaded a file, approved a prompt, or accessed sensitive data. Attackers also benefit from weak attribution by using stolen credentials or compromised accounts to blend in. Defenses focus on managed identities, single sign-on, identity logs, browser telemetry, and policy controls that make every high-risk action traceable back to an account.
