An ideal customer profile is a description of the customer type most likely to benefit from a product and decide to buy it. It usually combines firmographic and behavioral details such as company size, industry, budget, security maturity, pain points, and buying authority. In cyber security, an ICP helps vendors focus sales, marketing, and product work on the organizations that are most likely to convert and stay long term.
It also matters for defense. If a security team knows its own ICP-like target environment, such as cloud-first startups, regulated enterprises, or small businesses with limited staff, it can choose tools that match real operational needs instead of buying generic features. Attackers use a similar idea when they tailor phishing, social engineering, or malware delivery to organizations they expect to be easier to compromise or more valuable to exploit. A precise ICP reduces wasted effort and improves both targeting and risk management.
