I/Q data

Raw in-phase and quadrature samples used to represent radio signals digitally.

I/Q data are the raw in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) sample streams used to represent a radio signal digitally. Together, these two components preserve both the amplitude and phase of the waveform, which lets software reconstruct, demodulate, filter, or analyze the signal after capture. In software-defined radio, this is the core format that makes a radio “programmable.”

In cyber security, I/Q data matters because wireless attacks and defenses often depend on examining signals, not just packets. Analysts use it to detect rogue transmitters, replay unusual emissions, or study modulation patterns in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and other RF systems. Attackers can also capture I/Q samples to reverse-engineer protocols, test jamming techniques, or build signal-processing tools for interception and research. Any device that exposes clean I/Q output becomes a useful platform for both offensive wireless experimentation and defensive spectrum monitoring.
