A HUD, or heads-up display, is the on-screen interface that shows live game information such as health, ammo, fuel, maps, alerts, and interaction prompts. It is meant to keep important status data visible without forcing the player to open menus. In software terms, the HUD is part of the application’s presentation layer and often reflects real-time state from the game engine.
HUDs matter in cyber security because they can expose internal logic, debug features, and development status when a build is leaked or inspected. Security teams may review HUD elements to see whether a test menu, telemetry field, or unfinished feature reveals more than intended. Attackers can also imitate HUD-style overlays in malicious software, using fake prompts or status panels to mislead users and capture input. Watching what the HUD shows is often a fast way to understand what a system is tracking and where sensitive information might leak.
