HTTPS certificate

A digital credential used by browsers to verify a site and encrypt traffic.

An HTTPS certificate is a digital credential that binds a domain name to a cryptographic key. Browsers use it to confirm they are talking to the intended site and to set up encrypted HTTPS traffic. This helps protect users from eavesdropping, tampering, and simple impersonation.

In cyber security, certificates matter because trust in a site’s identity depends on the certificate being valid and issued for the right domain. Attackers may try to abuse weak domain control, stolen certificate material, or fraudulent issuance to create a convincing fake site or intercept traffic. Defenders monitor certificate issuance, validate DNS and domain ownership, and watch for unexpected certificates so they can spot trust-chain abuse early.
