Hotend

The heated part of a 3D printer that melts filament before extrusion.

The hotend is the heated part of an FDM 3D printer that melts filament before it reaches the nozzle. It usually includes the heater block, temperature sensor, heat break, and the nozzle itself. Its job is to turn solid filament into a controlled stream of molten plastic so the printer can extrude clean layers at the right rate.

In cyber security, hotends matter because many modern printers are networked, remotely managed, or driven by software jobs. If an attacker can change printer settings, inject malicious G-code, or tamper with firmware, they may force unsafe temperatures, clog the melt path, or damage hardware. Defenders reduce that risk with access control, signed firmware, temperature monitoring, and network isolation for printer controllers. In practice, the hotend is a small mechanical component with a big operational impact: its thermal behavior directly affects print quality, reliability, and equipment safety.
