Hinge

A joint that lets one part rotate while remaining attached to another.

A hinge is a joint that lets one part rotate while staying attached to another. In cyber security, hinges matter because many devices and facilities depend on physical covers, racks, enclosures, and access panels that must open for maintenance but still resist intrusion.

Attackers can target hinges during forced-entry, tampering, or theft by prying at the moving edge, breaking alignment, or gaining access to ports, disks, batteries, or wiring inside a case. Defenders reduce that risk with concealed or reinforced hinges, tamper switches, locking mechanisms, and careful placement of access points. A well-designed hinge balances usability and protection: it allows authorized service while making unauthorized opening noisy, slow, or difficult.
