Heat buildup

The accumulation of thermal energy in or around a material.

Heat buildup is the accumulation of thermal energy in or around a material. In cybersecurity, it matters because computers, storage devices, network gear, and industrial controllers all generate heat while they run. If that heat is not removed, components can throttle performance, behave unpredictably, or fail outright.

Attackers may try to push systems into overheating by driving sustained CPU, GPU, or power load, which can create a denial of service, trigger emergency shutdowns, or damage hardware. Heat buildup can also reveal operational patterns: unusually hot devices may indicate heavy cryptomining, hidden processing, or an overworked security appliance. Defenders reduce risk with telemetry, fan and sensor monitoring, cooling design, and thresholds that limit load before thermal stress becomes a failure point.
