Hash disclosure

A flaw where authentication data derived from a password can be exposed during login processing.

Hash disclosure is a flaw where authentication data derived from a password is exposed during a login exchange. Instead of returning only a yes-or-no result, a vulnerable service may leak a password hash or related challenge-response material that should have stayed internal. This does not always reveal the plaintext password, but it gives an attacker a valuable target for offline cracking.

It matters because hashes can often be tested at high speed without further contact with the victim system. If the password is weak, reused, or poorly protected, the leaked material may lead to account compromise, especially on privileged management interfaces such as BMC or IPMI systems. Defenders reduce the risk by restricting access to management services, segmenting networks, using strong unique passwords, disabling unnecessary remote login features, and updating firmware or software that handles authentication.
