Hash claim

A unique identifier used to label or track a reported incident.

A hash claim is a unique identifier, usually a long hexadecimal string, used to label or track a reported cyber incident. In ransomware and threat-intelligence reporting, it helps analysts refer to one specific claim without relying on a victim name, screenshot, or narrative that may be incomplete or false.

Hash claims matter because they can be easy to copy, but they are not proof of compromise. A claim may exist with no confirmed breach, no victim website, and no evidence of data theft or downtime. Defenders use the hash to search internal logs, correlate alerts, and compare it with other reporting. If the identifier appears in a leak site post, case tracker, or chat channel, security teams still need to validate it against telemetry, affected assets, and business impact before treating the allegation as real.
