Hardware visibility

The degree to which a system’s internal behavior can be inspected and understood.

Hardware visibility is the degree to which a system’s internal behavior can be inspected and understood. High visibility means engineers can see how chips, buses, firmware, and peripheral paths interact; low visibility means important functions are hidden behind undocumented parts, proprietary interfaces, or opaque designs. In practice, visibility helps determine whether a device can be trusted, repaired, audited, or securely updated.

In cyber security, low hardware visibility matters because defenders may miss malicious features, design flaws, or unexpected data flows. Attackers can also exploit hidden behavior in poorly documented components to evade review or to persist below the software layer. Security teams use reverse engineering, hardware probing, and firmware analysis to raise visibility and build a more accurate trust model. In devices with undocumented chips or critical paths such as audio, power, or storage, visibility is often the difference between assumptions and evidence.
