Hardware support

The set of device-specific components and maintenance needed for an operating system to run reliably and securely.

Hardware support is the set of device-specific drivers, firmware interfaces, boot components, and ongoing maintenance an operating system needs to run correctly on a particular phone, laptop, or server. It is more than basic compatibility: secure hardware support also means the system can verify boot integrity, receive updates reliably, and use device features without exposing unnecessary attack surface.

In cyber security, hardware support matters because a strong operating system can only protect users if the underlying device behaves as expected. Weak or incomplete support can break encryption, delay patches, or leave firmware bugs unaddressed. Attackers often exploit those gaps through vulnerable drivers, outdated firmware, or insecure boot chains. Defenders focus on hardware support to enable secure boot, timely updates, and consistent hardening across supported devices. For hardened platforms like secure Android builds, the quality of hardware support can be the difference between a real security boundary and a system that is secure only on paper.
