Hardware emulation

Software or firmware that imitates the behavior of a physical device.

Hardware emulation is software or firmware that imitates the behavior of a physical device, such as a disk drive, network card, or controller. Instead of only reproducing data, it tries to match timing, commands, error states, and other device responses so that an operating system or application behaves as if the original hardware were present.

In cyber security, hardware emulation is used to test malware, analyze firmware, preserve legacy systems, and replace scarce components in a controlled way. Accurate emulation helps defenders inspect device interactions safely and spot bugs that only appear with real peripherals. Attackers can also abuse emulated or virtual devices to hide suspicious behavior, bypass checks that expect real hardware, or target weaknesses in emulation layers. Because many security decisions depend on how a device reacts, fidelity and edge-case handling matter as much as raw functionality.
